I almost “fell” into accounting by accident during my post secondary years. I was enrolled in agricultural college, and discovered I loved bookkeeping (who doesn’t) right in the middle of a farm accounting course. I continued my studies at Grant McEwan in Edmonton, Alberta, where I received my accounting diploma and went looking for work.
I started my career with a Chartered Accountants Firm and spent the better part of the next 18 years learning and perfecting the needs of our clients. This was a wonderful experience for me as I gained experience in all aspects of business and specifically the bookkeeping challenges that face every business owner sooner or later.
I was responsible for preparing manual journals and trial balance reports and posting to general ledgers which evolved to using early versions of accounting software. As the software used to process business records became more comprehensive, I become involved in the training and IT network support of staff and clients through this fundamental change to the accounting industry. The expertise and knowledge that I obtained over those years has proven to be an invaluable part of making my Bookkeeping and Consulting Business what it is today.
Because of my desire to stay abreast of changes in the industry, I have pursued highly recognized training certifications in both the bookkeeping and software industries. I earned my Certified Professional Bookkeeping (CPB) from the Institute of Professional Bookkeepers in August 2009. Later that year I obtained my Distinguished Financial Advisor (DFA) Bookkeeping Specialist designation from the Knowledge Bureau.
I have top level certifications for Sage 50 (Simply Accounting) and QuickBooks Desktop and recently obtained my Advanced QuickBooks Online certification.
I was honoured in 2015 to be awarded a Fellowship from the Institute of Professional Bookkeepers of Canada.
My career path has also given me the opportunity to teach others. I am currently involved with bookkeeper training, including manual bookkeeping practices as well as software based instruction at NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology).
I am a dog lover, and a big fan of all critters. I have 3 dogs and 2 cats and consider an afternoon in the dog park the “can’t miss” ingredient in a great day!
